As a family, we prioritize family vacations. As we were planning for this year’s vacation out west, I recall a conversation I had with my sister about a hiking experience she and her husband had while vacationing in Hawaii. They were considering a hiking adventure on the Awa’awapuhi Trail on the island of Kauai- a 6-mile hike with an elevation gain of nearly 2000 feet. They inquired with a park ranger about the hike and sought advice to gauge if they were prepared for the adventure. They were asked, “What’s in your bag?” They quickly realized they needed more supplies to make the journey. After the ranger’s counsel about being prepared, they picked up additional water and snacks before starting the trail. This extra preparation made all the difference for a great adventure. The interesting thing is that the trail was downhill to the vista, and uphill coming back. The view was well worth the journey but there were some necessary steps for preparation. As a coach, I don’t offer my advice, but I do like to ask clients about their next adventure. “What's in the bag?”-type of questions help sift through the processes of readiness for what’s next in life and leadership.
