Secrets of Longevity

Writer's picture: Eric StenderEric Stender

Our family recently completed a multi-year partnership with an orthodontist in our area.  The process was well worth the time and investment, and the outcome is something to smile about!  The practice has been in business for decades and has developed a reputation of excellence and service.  When talking with their team on our last visit, I asked a senior partner in the office this question, “What is the secret to longevity?”  I was able to summarize their answer to this important question:

COMPETENCE  The care team was well-trained and certified to provide professional care.  They knew what they were doing and could easily handle an issue or question that arose.  The visible competence paved the way for their credibility to shine.  Integrity and excellence were evident values throughout our experience.

RELATABILITY.  The level of care we experienced translated complex processes into easy-to-understand actions that could be explained in everyday language.  In any care system, bedside manor is so important.  The staff was easy to get along with and made the patient and family relationships top priorities, hence this casual conversation.  Availability and reliability helped this business remain successful over the long haul.

GOOD TEAM.  Having a good team is the secret sauce of longevity.  Competence and reliability can only take you so far.  It is said that to go fast, go alone; but to go far, go together.  The care team made all the difference to make our experience one we recommend to other families.  Training a team takes a lot of work, but the outcomes benefit all involved.

BONUS- Heritage of Care.  This was a bonus, because the doctor came from a doctor family.  So keeping these priorities at the forefront were likely both caught and taught, resulting in an ongoing legacy of longevity.

This by no means is an exhaustive list, but it offers some key traits to build upon in developing your own leadership longevity.  Comment below with insights you have on how to cultivate longevity.
