Overwhelmed

stenders03

OVERWHELMED? We've all been there. Full schedules, unrealistic expectations (sometimes the ones we put on ourselves, ouch), and not experiencing clear results can cause us to feel overwhelmed like that of a river at flood stage. I am a Christian coach who follows Jesus and daily connects with the Bible. Recently I read 2 Corinthians 1.8-9: “We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God,” (emphasis added). When we feel overwhelmed, we need not only pause to consider what got us there, but also consider the result that those feelings can bring. This passage helps us lift our focus "just trying to make it by relying on our own strength," to relying on God. From coaching cross-cultural leaders, I know that the feeling of being "crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure" is familiar territory in the adventurous, yet challenging terrain of inter-cultural work. Connecting with a like-minded coach during these times of overwhelm can bring some life, hope, and endurance to lean forward in making long-term cross-cultural connections.
