On our recent family vacation to Colorado, we took the opportunity to ascend to the top of Pikes Peak by way of the Cog Railway. This iconic train takes travelers up the mountain to the amazing, but chilly vistas at the top. The Cog Railway isn’t just a typical train system. The difference is that there is a cog system that keeps the train moving forward. When it has to stop, the cogs remain engaged on the center track rail, preventing any backward movement. Throughout the entire journey, the internal mechanism remains engaged. Though it is not visible to the passengers, this internal mechanism keeps the train moving forward for the 1 hour journey each way. This isn’t the only way to ascend to the top. You could always drive up the highway of 186 turns, take a rescue helicopter, or like the original adventures up the mountain, take the 3 day journey on mule. We chose the train.
There are even two types of cog trains that are utilized: diesel and steam. Both have the same internal mechanism, it’s just that one has to take a short break to reactivate the steam.
Reflecting on this amazing experience with my family, I began to think of the powerful internal mechanism that kept things moving forward-- the cog.
What internal mechanism are you equipped with to keep you moving forward in your life and leadership? Hope, Calling, and Purpose can be powerful forces. Adding a Coaching component to these can multiply your effectiveness. What are the things that keep you on the track or keep you moving forward? Over the past few years, the mechanism that has kept me moving forward has been Leadership Coaching. Coaching conversations provide the focus, consistency, and movement needed for me to be able to lean forward and stay on track with my God-given calling and purpose.
We traveled using the cog train in June, but the venue offers year-round access. Getting connected with a coach is powerful and there is year-round access. This gives the potential for unlimited focus and potential.
