Open System - Here in the Midwest we’re experiencing sub-zero winter temperatures. This causes us to make some adjustments to endure these extremely cold days. To make sure your plumbing pipes don’t freeze up and burst, one tip is to leave some water faucets on, especially at your most vulnerable spots such as faucets closest to outside walls. Opening up your system, just at a slow trickle allows your system to be open and flowing, keeping the movement steady so that pipes won’t freeze. Before bed, one night, I followed this tip, and then BURST! -a powerful idea came to mind. Did I get ya there? I began making some powerful leadership coaching connections about the importance of keeping an open system:
Open systems help leaders withstand the pressure. Pipes that freeze up will burst and create a huge mess of other problems. Likewise, when leaders burst when their systems are under pressure, it causes other major problems often affecting the ones closest to us. Having no outlet to process all the ups and downs that come with the pressures of leadership can freeze up even the most dedicated leader.
Open systems give leaders room to breathe. Leaders often admit that the hectic schedules they maintain have little time to just breathe. Working with a coach gives leaders both the permission and space to just breathe. Like a fresh breath of brisk air, leaders can then clear their mind for fresh action.
Open systems cause leaders to prioritize integrity. Under pressure, weaknesses in pipes develop into cracks, and these areas of compromise will affect the whole system. The integrity of your entire plumbing system can be compromised by one event. Coaching conversations allow time for regular system maintenance, especially in prioritizing integrity. Struggles can be identified, issues can be dealt with, and values can be solidified.
So, what kind of system are you operating with in your leadership? I would recommend an open system. Closed systems lead to disaster.
