Strategy, not Goals

stenders03

I love goals. They help me stay on track and give momentum throughout the year. I’ve worked personally and professionally on the topic. Recently I was challenged to think about accomplishments through a new lens. Carey Nieuwhof’s article on goals adds some fresh air to the conversation of moving forward with momentum and intentionality, by shifting the focus to strategies. Carey states that “outcome-driven goals feel motivating, but process-goals produce better results in the long run.”

Goals are great, but often they are not realistic or actionable. Not accomplishing a goal for the year can be frustrating. Focusing on intentional strategies to accomplish your goals gives us more traction and hope. I recently applied these concepts to a health-related goal.

My goal is to remain physically fit in my 40’s. Over the past few years, I have focused on exercise and eating habits. Often, I found myself focusing on the scale. Recently, I applied this shift from goals to strategies, giving me a fresh perspective.

To accomplish my goal of remaining fit in my 40’s. It’s a great goal, but I need a strategy to accomplish my goal. I recently have committed to a new strategy-focused mindset. For me this meant focusing on burning breakfast calories to arrive at net zero calories at lunch. I do this 3 days-a-week by running and using our elliptical machine. One time, my target was burning 400 calories in 30 minutes. Half-way through my time on the elliptical, I was behind pace. I adjusted my strategy to increase my RPM’s putting me closer to my target pace. I finished just short of my goal, but I didn’t feel defeated. Why? Because I focused on process not outcomes.

My emphasis was on my Strategy, which was measurable, and adjustable. Using this mindset and strategy has helped me stay current in my overall goal. I am committing to my strategies. So at this time of year, I’m wondering: What STRATEGIES are you committing to accomplish your goals? Let’s talk.
