STAYING POWER

On a recent road trip, our family experienced an incredible display of “STAYING POWER.” Right when we left, a wasp landed on our windshield. As we drove through our small town, it stayed. Accelerating onto a state highway, it stayed! 45mph. 55+mph. The wasp stayed. For 20 miles, stayed. I didn’t dare turn on the wipers, we were cheering him on! He seemed to be alternating legs to stand on while straining to become as aerodynamic as possible. Now came the interstate. 60mph. Stayed. +70mph. Stayed. For 9 miles! Then, after staying on the windshield for 30 minutes, he finally flew off, it was remarkable. I don’t know what gave him the power to stay: fear, determination, stubbornness, instinct, or insanity. But that wasp demonstrated what STAYING POWER looks like.

As as leader, I was challenged by this example of Staying Power. In leadership there are times that you just have to hang on for dear life, times where we have to find the resolve to remain with STAYING POWER. This power is drawn from deep resources of determination, grit, faith, calling, and maybe a custom mixture of them all. I’m no expert, but on it’s own, I don’t think traveling +30 miles to a destination is possible for a wasp. What I had to offer (my windshield) brought that wasp to new destinations that would otherwise be impossible. I connected the dots to the coaching I’ve experienced in the last few years. Coaching has helped me and other leaders I’ve coached STAY THE COURSE when challenging winds threaten our grip. Coaching conversations give the time and space to increase your STAYING POWER. If that power is lacking for you, Coaching can be just the approach you need to be able to make changes and adjustments to increase your STAYING POWER in this season of our life and leadership.
