This summer during our vacation out west we spent about a week in the Steamboat Springs, CO area. When researching the area, we decided one day to visit nearby Stagecoach State Park. According to weather reports, there was a good chance of rain, but we decided to take the short trip anyway. The ride in the van seemed was an adventure through a few too many winding roads, we even feared we had gotten lost, worse yet there were rain clouds developing. One thing is for sure: mountain weather is unpredictable. We made it into the park, but the clouds were quickly getting dark and the rain had begun, limiting our view of the reservoir lake below. We considered turning around to go back into town, but decided to wait out the cold rain and ate our sandwiches in the van.
Shortly after we had finished our lunch, the rain had stopped, the clouds cleared, and the sun began to shine, revealing a beautiful scenic vista over the lake with the mountains behind like a glorious backdrop. None of this could be seen just minutes earlier. We got out, explored the shore, enjoyed the sunshine, and marveled at the views. It turned out to be a great afternoon.
The point I want to make is that based on the reports and what we had initially experienced, we weren’t 100% sure that it would be worth our time. The adventure of the afternoon developed as we were already on our way. Our family learned some valuable lessons that day:
(1)there’s beauty and mystery in the clouds
(2)sometimes you just have to move forward past uncertainty
(3)the journey is as much an adventure as the destination
(4)we need to stick together
