In a recent visit with my Dad in Chicago, I had a powerful AHA! moment during my stay as I sat in on a few in-home physical therapy appointments. The physical therapist made some powerful statements that resonated with life coaching.
The second statement that resonated with coaching was: “it’s more important what you’re doing when I’m not here.” This resonates with the heart of leadership. What is accomplished in a physical therapy session is important in order to become stronger, but what happens in between sessions is what matters most. The success of the partnership is based on the patient’s ability to build from each session in order to get stronger everyday. The expectation is that the patient will do the work to be ready for the next session. Failure to follow through won’t get the client where they want to go.
Similarly, leaders actively engaged in coaching must do the work in between sessions to maximize the growth experience. I have experienced powerful moments of discovery and awareness in coaching conversations. I’ve seen clients translate the dots of connection into decisive, self-driven action steps that are relevant, strategic, and doable. Once this dynamic is experienced, it gives clients the course to follow and the fuel to keep going so that each session builds upon the momentum of strategic action. Like in therapy, the client and coach build a powerful partnership built on the premise that the most important work is done between sessions.
