I wanted to share a final insight from the in-home physical therapy appointments that my Dad had. When I was with him earlier this year, I gleaned another powerful insight that resonates with the work that I do as a life coach.
Dad was asked a powerful question, actually one that I commonly use as a life coach, “What’s your goal?” This simple approach can bring a lot of clarity, especially when processes and outcomes seem unclear. My dad responded that he would like to walk without a walker, something that had become a new norm. The physical therapist agreed and now knew how to best guide the therapy experience toward the client’s specific goal. My coaching ears were tingling! This is exactly how coaching works. The client doesn’t serve the coach’s goal. Instead, there is a shared partnership with the client’s goals and success becomes the focal point. When’s the last time you’ve had a conversation built with that foundation? I’d love to chat over a free curiosity call by searching [coacheric.me] and book an appointment on my calendar.
So, why does this all matter? Let me share with you what has happened post-therapy. There was a fire! Not in my dad’s unit or floor, but one lower level unit had a fire causing an evacuation of his three-story apartment complex. Prior to physical therapy Dad could only walk slowly with the aid of a walker. Walking down the hall in his complex would have been a major undertaking. Over the course of several months, through the use of physical therapy, dad was able to do away with the walker (his stated goal) and walk simply with a cane. While he was not in any immediate danger that day, the strength that he developed in between sessions really mattered because it gave him the ability to walk to safety. The physical therapist wasn’t there in the moment of crisis, but the work that was done through a partnership with a certified professional got him to where he needed to go. This is coaching! Partnering with others to see their goals come to life. Coaching is powerful! So, what’s your goal?
