Bald Spots & Blindspots

Bald spots and blindspots.  Anyone can notice a bald spot, but blindspots are revealed through connection.

Being a middle aged man has deepened my sensitivity to comments about bald spots.  Like many of my comrades, baldness seems to be inevitable.  Any critic can easily notice a bald spot in a crowd, but it takes a trusting relationship to identify blindspots.

Bald spots often produce a reaction for many men.  When critics spot them, some go to products, supplements, or just bite the bullet and just shave their whole head.  Some ignore or just try to work with what’s left and do one of those comb-overs.

Sure, there’s expensive treatments out there, but baldness is a reality that many have to accept.  Bald spots are obvious to any critic.  If somebody identifies a bald spot that I have I can get defensive and become bothered.

Blindspots are different.  A critic can spot a bald spot, but it takes a trusted relationship, I suggest a coach, to help identify and respond to blindspots.  Here is where coaching can make all the difference.  As I train/coach my teen drivers, I emphasize the need to take the extra effort to look at any blindspots.  Often, I will ask them to check the areas that are hidden between the mirrors.  When blindspots are identified, it is far better to respond, not react.  It’s easy to get defensive.

We all have areas where we miss what everyone else sees.  We have areas that we don’t realize need improvement, until there’s a problem.  A great environment to explore possible blindspots in our lives is through a professional coaching conversation. This gives a safe space for allowing someone to ask about blindspots, things that we don’t normally see that can pose dangers for our leadership.

The blindspots that a professional coach can help identify come not by way of critique, but by way of connection.  Through powerful questions that evoke new awareness, coaches help clients develop a strategic response, instead of a flippant reaction.

Responding to blindspots brings clarity, direction, purpose, and growth--even if your follicle growth is slowing down.
